ADM's lysine business is inseparable from the most famous antitrust case in US food industry history: the lysine price-fixing cartel of 1992-1995. ADM, along with Japanese competitors Kyowa Hakko and Ajinomoto and Korean competitors Sewon and Cheil Jedang, secretly coordinated global lysine prices and production quotas in meetings that the FBI secretly recorded. The cartel was exposed by an extraordinary undercover operation: Mark Whitacre, a senior ADM executive who managed the company's lysine division, simultaneously ran the price-fixing scheme and served as an FBI informant wearing a wire to meetings in Hawaii, Paris, Tokyo, and other locations. The FBI recordings captured ADM executives discussing market division with the explicit line "The competitor is our friend, and the customer is our enemy." ADM paid a then-record $100 million antitrust fine in 1996 (later surpassed by other cartel fines). The story was adapted into the 2009 film "The Informant!" starring Matt Damon as Whitacre. ADM continued its lysine business post-scandal, shifting in 2021 from dry lysine to liquid and encapsulated forms, and filed a 2025 anti-dumping petition against Chinese and other imports with Evonik, demonstrating that the cartel break-up produced a more competitive market that US producers now seek to protect through trade law rather than secret price-fixing meetings.
