Did you know2024
Aksa Akrilik is the world's largest single-site producer of acrylic fiber — the fluffy synthetic in sweaters, blankets, socks, upholstery and UV-resistant outdoor fabric. But acrylic fiber is made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and PAN is the precursor for carbon fiber: carbonize acrylic fiber and you get the lightweight, ultra-strong carbon fiber used in aircraft, wind-turbine blades, pressure vessels and missiles. Aksa, through its DowAksa joint venture, makes exactly that leap — from textile acrylic to industrial carbon fiber. So the same company and the same base polymer underlie both a cheap acrylic sweater and the carbon fiber in a jet's wing or a wind turbine. It's one of the cleanest dual-use materials stories there is: the homely sweater fiber, transformed by heat, becomes a strategic aerospace-and-defense material. The patio-cushion fabric and the fighter-jet composite are, chemically, the same thread at different temperatures. [verify: Aksa largest single-site acrylic PAN + DowAksa carbon fiber confirmed]
