Did you know2019
Ambarella's image processors are dual-use across consumer cameras, car ADAS safety, and mass video surveillance — and that put a U.S. fabless chipmaker squarely inside export-control geopolitics. It was a key SoC supplier into Chinese surveillance giant Hikvision (high-teens percent of Ambarella's revenue), so when the U.S. added Hikvision and Dahua to the Entity List in 2019 over Xinjiang-linked surveillance, Ambarella's stock fell ~12% and it had to pivot away from that business. The very same edge-vision chip is a safety feature, a consumer toy, or a tool of state surveillance depending entirely on who buys it. [verify: Hikvision ~15-20% rev, -11.5% drop, 2019 Entity List all confirmed independently]

Ambarella was best known as 'the GoPro chip' — its video-compression and image-signal-processor SoC powered the action-camera boom. As GoPro's growth stalled and it moved to design its own silicon, Ambarella reinvented itself around edge-AI computer vision (its CVflow architecture), pivoting hard into automotive ADAS, security cameras, drones and robotics; AI vision processors now drive more than 70% of its revenue. A company once dependent on a single consumer gadget became an autonomy and edge-AI chip designer. [verify: GoPro origin + edge-AI pivot confirmed; AI ~80% revenue (claim >70%, conservative)]
