AVK International was founded in 1941 in Galten, Jutland, Denmark by the Bendixen family — during the German occupation of Denmark in World War II. The company started making valves for Danish water and gas distribution infrastructure and has remained under Bendixen family control for 84 years. Denmark's municipal water systems, built and operated by local utility companies (forsyningsselskaber), provided a stable domestic market that AVK could grow from before expanding internationally. The company built its global presence through the "glocal" model: establishing local manufacturing subsidiaries in each major market rather than exporting from Denmark — the Minden, Nevada facility serves North America; the Anhui, China facility is the largest overseas base serving Asian markets. This local manufacturing approach follows the water infrastructure market's procurement preference for domestically manufactured valve products (many municipal water tenders have domestic content requirements or preferences). AVK International now has 100+ subsidiaries in 40+ countries and is one of the three dominant global valve and hydrant companies alongside Kennedy/Clow (US, McWane-owned) and Rexnord's Zurn (US). A Danish family valve company started under Nazi occupation now controls a significant portion of the global water distribution infrastructure hardware supply chain.
