BAE Systems Electronic Systems descends from Sanders Associates, founded in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1951 to develop electronic countermeasures for US Cold War nuclear bombers. Sanders developed the first airborne jamming pods (used in Vietnam War), invented chaff dispensing systems, and pioneered passive electronic warfare techniques that remain classified. Lockheed Martin acquired Sanders in 1990; BAE Systems acquired Lockheed Sanders (electronic warfare and space electronics) in 2000 as part of a broader defense industry restructuring driven by the post-Cold War consolidation. BAE retained the Manassas, Virginia rad-hard chip fab (which had previously been the IBM Federal Systems Division semiconductor facility) and the Nashua EW facility. This single acquisition gave BAE Systems a monopoly on US rad-hard electronics for nuclear weapon systems — heritage from IBM Federal Systems → Loral Federal Systems → Lockheed → BAE Systems. The nuclear weapons supply chain passes through a series of corporate acquisitions traceable to IBM's Cold War government electronics division.
