In June 2022, a single batch of contaminated lecithin from a Hungarian supplier arrived at Barry Callebaut's Wieze plant — the world's largest chocolate factory. Because lecithin flows through all production lines simultaneously, the company had to shut down the entire facility and block all chocolate produced June 25–29. Barry Callebaut supplies approximately 25% of global industrial chocolate; the shutdown cost CHF 76.9 million ($77M) and idled Wieze for over six weeks. No contaminated product reached consumers. The incident exposed how a single trace ingredient can halt the world's largest chocolate operation.

Chocolate's supply chain is one of the most troubled in food. Around 60-70% of the world's cocoa comes from just two West African countries — Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana — grown largely by smallholders, and it has long been dogged by child labor and deforestation, the subject of lawsuits and certification schemes. Then in 2023-24, cocoa prices spiked to record highs as disease (swollen-shoot virus, black pod) and bad weather hit West African crops, squeezing the entire chocolate industry. So Barry Callebaut sits at the chokepoint of a climate-, disease- and ethics-exposed crop concentrated in two countries, and the price of nearly every chocolate bar in the world is tied to the harvest and the labor conditions on West African cocoa farms. The treat is built on one of the most concentrated and fraught agricultural supply chains there is — and the recent price crisis showed how fast that fragility reaches the consumer, turning a cheap indulgence into a commodity-shock story.
