Benchmark Holdings was founded in 2000 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire — a city historically synonymous with steel, cutlery, and heavy engineering, not aquaculture. The founders — including CEO Malcolm Pye, who had a background in agricultural biotechnology and animal health — identified aquaculture genetics and health products as an underdeveloped market with high growth potential as global salmon and shrimp aquaculture was expanding rapidly. Sheffield's distance from the sea and from aquaculture operations was immaterial given the company's focus on genetics programs (which are managed in breeding centers in Norway and Iceland) and health products (which are manufactured and distributed from other locations). Benchmark listed on the London Stock Exchange's AIM market and grew through acquisitions: Stofnfiskur (Iceland's leading salmon genetics company, founded 1989), Salmobreed (Norwegian salmon genetics), and multiple animal health product businesses including the license for Salmosan (azamethiphos). The acquisition of Stofnfiskur gave Benchmark significant control over the genetics that underpin Norwegian salmon farming — the world's largest salmon producing country relies on two or three breeding programs including Benchmark's Icelandic operation for the genetic improvement of its 450 million salmon smolt per year.
