Wood smoke condensates — the chemical product of Besmoke's smoking chambers — contain guaiacol, syringol, cresols, and phenols, which are the same phenolic compounds used as industrial antiseptics, wood preservatives, and pharmaceutical excipients. Creosote (a concentrated wood smoke distillate product) is simultaneously a regulated food smoke flavoring component, a coal-tar-derived wood preservative for railway sleepers and utility poles, and the active ingredient in historical medical preparations. The phenolic chemistry in smoked bacon and smoked salmon is chemically related to the active compounds in chloraseptic throat spray (phenol), Listerine antiseptic (thymol, a natural phenol derivative), and industrial wood preservation treatments. A shortage of specific wood species (beech, oak) or a regulatory change restricting phenolic smoke condensates would affect food flavoring, pharmaceutical antiseptic chemistry, and industrial wood treatment in overlapping supply chains.
European Food Safety Authority ↗Origin2023
Besmoke Ltd developed from the growing demand for "clean label" natural food flavoring in Europe as food manufacturers sought to replace artificial smoke flavor additives. EU Regulation (EC) No 2065/2003 created a regulatory framework requiring that smoke flavoring "Primary Products" be specifically authorized by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) — a process requiring substantial toxicological data submission. The authorization requirement created a regulatory moat: companies without existing EFSA-authorized products faced years of safety assessment before entering the EU smoke flavouring market. Besmoke's natural-draft SmokeCreate smoking chambers, which produce genuine wood smoke rather than condensed chemical extracts, position their products as "natural flavouring" rather than the more restricted "smoke flavouring" category — a regulatory distinction that affects labeling requirements across European processed food products.
