  The global liquid packaging board (LPB) market — the paperboard substrate inside every aseptic milk carton, juice box, and soup carton — is supplied by approximately three companies: Billerud (Gävle, Sweden), Stora Enso (Imatra, Finland), and Sappi (Gratkorn, Austria). Tetra Pak, which manufactures the finished cartons that account for approximately 185 billion packs per year globally, is dependent on these three suppliers for its core raw material. Because LPB requires specific fiber characteristics, coating chemistry, and barrier lamination compatibility with Tetra Pak's converting process, it is not easily substituted — qualification of a new LPB supplier requires years of testing and reformulation. The three current suppliers collectively control the supply chain for the packaging format that delivers approximately 200 billion liters of beverages annually. A sustained disruption at any one of these three mills — fire, labor action, energy supply failure — would directly constrain Tetra Pak's carton production and the dairy and beverage supply chains dependent on aseptic packaging for long-distance distribution.

• Origin2024

  The modern Billerud AB was created in 2012 when Billerud (a Swedish packaging paper specialist) merged with Korsnäs (a board and paper company majority-owned by Kinnevik, the Swedish Stenbeck investment conglomerate) to form BillerudKorsnäs. The merger combined Billerud's strength in sack kraft and kraft paper with Korsnäs's dominance in liquid packaging board — the coated paperboard substrate that Tetra Pak and others laminate into milk and juice cartons. In 2022, BillerudKorsnäs attempted to acquire Verso Corporation (a US coated paper maker) to gain US capacity, but the acquisition was terminated when due diligence revealed complications. Following the failed acquisition, the company simplified its identity back to "Billerud." This renaming illustrates a pattern common in Nordic forest-products companies: multiple identity changes through mergers and divestitures as the European paper industry consolidates to compete with global capacity growth. Billerud's current core is liquid packaging board at the Gävle, Sweden facility — the world's largest single-site LPB mill, whose output flows into the milk and juice cartons sold at every major European and many Asian retailers.
