Bullard invented the industrial hard hat in 1919 — arguably one of the most consequential personal safety innovations of the 20th century, which has prevented millions of worker deaths from head injuries in construction, mining, and manufacturing. The same Bullard family company now also makes firefighter thermal imaging cameras (TICs), competing with Teledyne FLIR for fire department budgets. The hard hat protects a worker's head physically against impact; the TIC protects a firefighter situationally by enabling vision through smoke. Both are head-level safety products serving different emergency contexts — physical head protection for construction workers and thermal situational awareness for firefighters — from the same 125-year-old family safety equipment company that started selling to Gold Rush miners in 1898.

Bullard was founded in 1898 by Edward Bullard in San Francisco during the Klondike Gold Rush, initially selling mining equipment and safety products to gold miners in the Alaskan frontier. The company's most historic product came in 1919 when E.W. Bullard introduced the 'Hard Boiled Hat' — a hard-shelled helmet made from steam-molded canvas and glue, inspired by World War I doughboy helmets, to protect workers in shipyards and industrial settings from falling objects. This became the world's first modern industrial hard hat. The Bullard hard hat became standard in the US industrial workforce, predating OSHA's head protection requirements by over 50 years. Today, Bullard is a fifth-generation family-owned business in Cynthiana, Kentucky. Their expansion into firefighter thermal imaging cameras in the 2000s-2010s added a completely different product category while serving the same safety market.

The Bullard Hard Boiled Hat (1919) is the origin of a critical industrial safety supply chain that continues today: industrial hard hats are on the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard required PPE list for construction, mining, logging, and many manufacturing sectors. The US hard hat market (Bullard, MSA V-Gard, Honeywell North, Klein Tools) produces tens of millions of hard hats annually for a $1B+ market. Bullard's 1919 innovation established the 'Type E' designation for electrical protection (still the ANSI/ISEA classification system today). As a privately-held, family-controlled business for five generations, Bullard avoided the fate of many safety equipment companies that were acquired by large conglomerates — it remains one of the few independent safety equipment makers that is vertically integrated from product design to manufacturing in the United States.
