China Animal Husbandry Industry Corporation (CAHIC) is a Chinese state enterprise under SASAC (State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission) that serves as the national animal vaccine manufacturing and distribution system for China's vast livestock sector. Pork is the primary protein in Chinese diet — China produces and consumes approximately half the world's pork — making swine health a strategic national food security concern comparable to grain supply. CAHIC was established to provide state-controlled animal health infrastructure for this strategically critical livestock sector. The company's strategic importance was demonstrated catastrophically from 2018-2020 when African Swine Fever (ASF) — a highly lethal hemorrhagic fever virus with no effective vaccine available until recently — swept through China's pig population, killing or forcing the culling of an estimated 40-55% of China's 440 million pig herd (the worst livestock disease outbreak in history). ASF eliminated the equivalent of the entire combined US and European pig population in under two years. CAHIC became a critical actor in China's ASF response — diagnosis, tracing, vaccination trials, and biosecurity guidance. The resulting pork supply crash drove Chinese pork prices up 170%+, contributed to food inflation across Asia, and created global demand pressure on alternative protein sources (chicken, fish). CAHIC's vaccine development capacity and distribution infrastructure for China's swine sector makes it a chokepoint in the world's most important livestock production system.
