Carpenter Technology is one of the key US makers of the superalloys that go inside jet engines — the nickel- and cobalt-based alloys and titanium that survive the extreme heat and stress of a turbine. Every commercial and military jet engine depends on these specialty alloys, and qualifying a new alloy or supplier for flight takes years, so the supply base is small and concentrated. So a relatively low-profile Pennsylvania metals company is a critical node in aerospace and defense: jet engines (GE, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce), missiles and airframes all rely on Carpenter-grade superalloys.
