  • Did you know2023

In 2007, the European Commission fined Coats Group €122.4 million for participating in a price-fixing cartel with YKK and Prym in the European market for zippers and 'haberdashery notions' (buttons, snaps, fasteners). Coats was specifically found guilty of fixing zipper prices and market sharing with YKK — the world's dominant zipper manufacturer. In July 2023, Coats sold its entire European Zips (Opti) operation to Aequita, a Munich-based family office, for effectively $1 million (net of debt). The world's largest industrial thread company: (1) was a convicted zipper cartel member alongside YKK, (2) received the largest fine in EU competition history for haberdashery at the time, and (3) then exited zippers entirely for approximately 1/122nd of its fine amount.
