    Corticeira Amorim is publicly known for sealing wine bottles, but cork is also a critical ablative thermal protection material for spacecraft and rockets. NASA has used cork on Saturn V rocket booster nozzles, Space Shuttle external tank foam insulation attachment, and currently on the Space Launch System (SLS). Cork ablates predictably under extreme heat: the cell walls carbonize and vaporize in a controlled layer-by-layer process that protects the underlying structure from aerodynamic heating during launch. Boeing and SpaceX also use cork composites in rocket fairings and adapter sections. Amorim's aerospace cork division (Amorim Cork Composites) supplies this aerospace-grade material.
