The same high-purity sand that Covia mines and grades has two completely different lives: it is the raw material of glass — bottles, pharmaceutical vials, windows and solar panels — and it is the proppant pumped a mile underground to hold open the fractures in shale wells during hydraulic fracturing. Glassmakers and frac crews are bidding for grades of the same mineral. That makes silica-sand demand a hidden coupling between the construction-and-consumer-glass economy and the oil-and-gas drilling cycle: when the shale boom surges, frac-sand demand competes for the sand resources, mine capacity and rail logistics that glass and foundry producers also rely on. "Sand" sounds infinitely abundant, but the right sand, near the right place, with the right purity, is not — and one company supplies it to both worlds.
