The same cryogenic turbomachinery engineering principles — gas bearings, high-speed impellers, precision seals at -200°C — apply whether the working fluid is methane being liquefied at a Sabine Pass LNG export terminal (energy supply) or helium being liquefied at a BLM-contracted Wyoming helium plant (medical/scientific supply). Cryostar SAS was founded in 1966 in Hésingue, Haut-Rhin — in Alsace, the French region that was alternately French and German from 1871 to 1945, and which carries a distinctive dual engineering culture: French precision craftsmanship and German manufacturing rigor. Cryostar grew as a specialist in cryogenic rotating equipment (turbines, pumps) leveraging the engineering infrastructure of the Upper Rhine industrial corridor. The company was acquired by Chart Industries in 2023 as part of Chart's $4.4B acquisition of Howden (UK rotating equipment), which itself had acquired Cryostar earlier. The post-acquisition Chart Industries is now the most vertically integrated cryogenic plant equipment company: its Clarksburg WV plant makes brazed aluminum heat exchangers (the cold boxes), Hésingue makes the turboexpanders, and Houston makes cryogenic storage vessels — three core helium plant components under one balance sheet.
