DAK Americas LLC (Charlotte NC US operations HQ; wholly-owned subsidiary of Alpek SAB de CV, Monterrey Mexico; Alpek is subsidiary of Alfa SAB; NYSE: ALPEKA) is the largest PET resin producer in North America; ~4.5 million metric tons/year PET capacity across plants in Alvin TX, Cape Fear NC, Spartanburg SC, and Columbia SC. DAK Americas (DAK = Dupont Alpek Kuester) was formed in 1997 as a joint venture between DuPont, Alpek, and Kuester — producing PET resin at the Corpus Christi TX and Wilmington NC facilities originally built by DuPont. Alpek subsequently acquired DuPont's stake. DAK Americas supplies PET resin to Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestlé Waters, and major US beverage bottle manufacturers. Alpek also operates PTA (purified terephthalic acid) plants in North America, making it vertically integrated from PTA to PET.

  • Origin2023

DAK Americas LLC was formed in 1997 as a joint venture between DuPont (which contributed its Carolina PET plants, originally built as Dacron polyester fiber operations in the 1950s), Alpek (Mexican petrochemical company), and Kuester (a German packaging investor). DuPont had built the Wilmington NC and Cape Fear NC PET facilities in the postwar era to produce Dacron polyester fiber — one of DuPont's synthetic fiber innovations. As beverage bottle PET demand surpassed fiber PET demand in the 1990s, the plants transitioned primarily to bottle-grade resin production. Alpek subsequently acquired DuPont's stake, making DAK Americas fully Mexican-owned. Alpek itself is a subsidiary of Alfa SAB de CV (Monterrey, Mexico; Garza Sada family) — the same Mexican industrial conglomerate that owns Sigma Alimentos (Oscar Mayer hot dog license in Mexico, La Chona processed meats). The same Mexican family group that sells Oscar Mayer hot dogs in Mexico also produces the PET resin in US Coca-Cola and Pepsi bottles.

DAK Americas, as North America's largest PET resin producer, supplies the same polymer to two industries that rarely see themselves in the same supply chain: (1) beverage packaging — DAK's PET resin is used to blow-mold the Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Nestlé water bottles sold at every US convenience store; and (2) textile/apparel — PET resin (the same polymer, different specifications) is melt-spun into polyester fiber that becomes the polyester fabric in clothing, carpeting, and fleece. The Coke bottle and the polyester fleece jacket share the same chemical structure — both are poly(ethylene terephthalate) chains derived from the same PTA and MEG monomers. DAK Americas' PTA plants (feeding its PET plants) sit at the upstream node of both the global beverage packaging supply chain and the global synthetic textile supply chain — two industries with $500B+ combined revenue whose fundamental chemistry is identical.
