Devro plc (SARIA)
World's #1 collagen casing manufacturer (~35% global market share). Acquired by SARIA Bio-Industries AG & Co. KG (German/Dutch animal by-products rendering company) for £540M in April 2023 — delisted from London Stock Exchange. SARIA processes animal by-products (blood, bone, hide, carcass) from European slaughterhouses; Devro turns bovine corium (inner hide layer) into edible collagen casings. The company that collects and processes animal carcasses also makes the casings for the sausages. Devro operates 7 manufacturing sites: Moodiesburn (Scotland), Jilemnice (Czech Republic), Slavkov (Czech Republic), USA, Australia, China, Netherlands.

Incident2023
In November 2022, German animal by-products rendering company SARIA Bio-Industries launched a £540M takeover bid for Devro plc (then London Stock Exchange listed). The acquisition completed in April 2023, delisting Devro. SARIA is itself owned by the Rethmann Group — the same private German family conglomerate that owns Remondis, one of Europe's largest waste management companies. The world's #1 collagen casing manufacturer is now a subsidiary of a waste-and-rendering company that is itself part of one of Europe's largest private waste management conglomerates. The supply chain for sausage casings leads to the German waste industry.
SARIA SE & Co. KG ↗Did you know2022
Devro plc was acquired by Saria Industries (Germany) in 2022 for £540M, consolidating the world's #1 and #3 collagen casing producers under the same ownership (Saria also owned Naturin collagen casings). This vertical integration between animal by-product rendering (Saria) and collagen casing manufacturing makes Saria-Devro simultaneously a collagen supplier and a major casing brand.
