  • Did you know2021

Domtar Corporation was acquired in 2021 by Paper Excellence Canada Holdings — a subsidiary of Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), controlled by the Widjaja family of Indonesia through Sinar Mas Group. This made Domtar — operator of some of North America's largest fluff pulp mills — a subsidiary of one of the world's largest pulp and paper conglomerates, headquartered in Jakarta. APP/Sinar Mas has a long history of deforestation allegations in Indonesia (Greenpeace campaigns). The acquisition means that the fluff pulp supply for US baby diapers and adult incontinence products (which previously was controlled by US and Canadian companies) is now controlled through an Indonesian family conglomerate. The same ownership group that operates Indonesian palm oil plantations (associated with tropical deforestation) now controls a major North American boreal forest fiber asset and key hygiene product supply chain. No US regulatory review blocked this transaction.
