    Drägerwerk AG was founded in 1889 in Lübeck, Germany by Bernhard Dräger, who invented the first pressure regulator for compressed gas. The original product was a pressure-reducing valve for gas lamps — a prosaic beginning. In 1902, Heinrich Dräger (Bernhard's son) invented the Pulmotor, the first mechanical artificial respiration device, used to revive miners after gas accidents. This single invention defined the dual trajectory of the company: safety equipment for industrial hazards AND medical respiratory support. By the 1930s, Dräger was making both gas masks for military/industrial use and oxygen equipment for hospitals. Today Dräger operates as two roughly equal divisions — Safety and Medical — with both traced to the same 1889 Lübeck pressure valve workshop and the 1902 Pulmotor invention.

    Dräger's Babylog VN500 neonatal ventilator is the world's most widely used ventilator for premature infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Premature infants born before 28 weeks gestation may have underdeveloped lungs that cannot sustain breathing independently — neonatal ventilation is the difference between survival and death for the most premature births. Dräger has been making neonatal ventilators since the 1970s and the Babylog brand is trusted in NICUs across Europe, Asia, and developing markets. The same Lübeck company that makes the SCBA for a firefighter who will enter a 700°C structure fire also makes the ventilator supporting a 500-gram premature infant. These two applications are as physically extreme as possible — one end of the spectrum being the most hostile environment a human can enter; the other being the most vulnerable human physiology that medical technology must support.
