DSM (Koninklijke DSM N.V.) was founded in 1902 as Dutch State Mines (De Staatsmijnen in Limburg) — the Netherlands government's coal mining enterprise in Limburg Province, established because the Dutch state believed coal was too strategically important to leave to private companies. As Limburg coal reserves depleted and oil replaced coal, DSM pivoted: first to fertilizers (nitrogen chemistry from coke oven gases), then to petrochemicals, then to specialty chemicals and life sciences. The transformative acquisition was purchasing Roche Vitamins for €1.75 billion in 2003 — giving DSM the world's largest vitamin manufacturing business, which Roche had built starting with Vitamin C synthesis in the 1930s under Nobel-winning chemists Tadeusz Reichstein and Paul Karrer. DSM then merged with Firmenich (a Geneva, Switzerland fragrance company, privately held by the Firmenich family since 1895) in 2023 to create dsm-firmenich — combining a Dutch coal company's descendants with a Swiss family fragrance house into a €14B life sciences and food ingredients conglomerate.
