Feldspar — the fluxing mineral that lowers the firing temperature of ceramics and is essential to making tiles, sanitaryware, tableware and glass — is one of the most geographically concentrated industrial minerals, with Turkey dominating world feldspar exports and Esan among the largest producers. So the global ceramics and tile industry (Italy, Spain, India and China all import feldspar) depends heavily on Turkish feldspar, and on Esan specifically. The bathroom tiles, toilets, dinner plates and even some glass of much of the world are fired with a flux mined disproportionately in one country — a concentration that quietly ties a huge swath of construction and housewares to Turkey's geology and export conditions. When energy costs or trade policy shift in Turkey, the delivered cost of ceramics worldwide moves with them, even though "feldspar" never appears on a product.

Esan is the mining arm of the Eczacıbaşı Group, one of Turkey's largest conglomerates — and in a neat closing of the loop, the same group also owns VitrA, a major bathroom-ceramics and tile brand. So the group mines the feldspar and makes the toilets and tiles, vertically integrated from the mineral in the ground to the glazed sink in the showroom. Beyond ceramics, Eczacıbaşı runs a pharmaceutical business (the group began as a pharmacy/pharma company) and the Selpak tissue and hygiene brand. So one Turkish family group spans industrial-minerals mining, finished bathroom ceramics, pharmaceuticals and consumer tissue at once — an emerging-market conglomerate threading from raw materials to multiple consumer categories, here uniquely owning both ends of the ceramics chain. The plate and the clay it's made from can belong to the same company.
