Electrosteel Castings Limited was founded in 1955 in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal by H.P. Bhatter — in the period of India's post-independence industrialization when Prime Minister Nehru's Planning Commission was directing investment into basic infrastructure including water supply systems. Calcutta (the British colonial capital of India until 1911) had a tradition of iron foundry and engineering going back to the colonial era, and Electrosteel built on this industrial heritage to make cast iron pipes for India's water infrastructure buildout. The company pioneered centrifugal (spun) ductile iron pipe technology in India in 1994 — the same technology used by global leaders like Xinxing, Saint-Gobain PAM, and McWane — bringing India's pipe industry to international quality standards. Electrosteel now supplies pipe to India's massive urban water infrastructure programs (JNNURM, AMRUT/Amrit 2.0) that are extending piped water to hundreds of millions of Indians who still lack reliable water supply, while also exporting to 130+ countries. The 1955 Calcutta foundry company serves simultaneously as a critical domestic water infrastructure supplier for one of the world's fastest-urbanizing countries and a global pipe exporter filling the same role internationally.
