ESD-SIC (Electric Smelting Delfzijl – Silicon Carbide) is a privately owned Dutch silicon carbide producer operating one of the largest SiC factories in the world. Produces up to 65,000 tonnes of crystalline SiC annually at its Farmsum (Delfzijl) site. Products include crystalline SiC, metallurgical SiC, refractory SiC (E-REFSIC), and TopSIC® (dried metallurgical grades). Self-described as the "World's most environmentally friendly producer of SiC."     The silicon carbide powder supply chain for power semiconductors is one of the most concentrated in advanced materials: globally fewer than ten companies can supply semiconductor-grade SiC source powder with the purity and particle morphology required for crystal growth by methods like physical vapor transport (PVT) or the modified Lely process. ESD-SiC operates as a specialty supplier in this tight market, where the same basic material (SiC) spans a purity and price spectrum from bulk metallurgical-grade (cents per kg) to semiconductor-grade precursor powder (tens of dollars per kg). The EV revolution has dramatically expanded demand for the semiconductor end of this spectrum: SiC MOSFETs and Schottky diodes are now standard in EV traction inverters, onboard chargers, and fast-charging infrastructure because SiC can switch at higher voltage and frequency than silicon with lower switching losses. The entire semiconductor SiC supply chain rests on Acheson-process SiC powder, upgraded through chemical purification, controlled particle sizing, and doping to meet crystal-growth specifications — a multi-stage purification ladder from industrial to electronic grade.
