(TSX-V/ASX: EMN) is developing the Chvaletice Manganese Project in Pardubice region, Czechia — a project based on reprocessing historical mine tailings from the Chvaletice coal-fired power station. Chvaletice sits on manganese-bearing black shale deposits that were mined for their manganese content during the Communist-era Czechoslovakia (1950s-1980s), with mine waste tailings deposited in a large impoundment adjacent to the former coal plant. The Chvaletice tailings contain approximately 26.6 million tonnes of manganese-bearing material at ~7% Mn — a waste pile that is both an environmental liability (the former operator left an unsecured tailings impoundment) and a battery-critical mineral reserve. Euro Manganese's project would simultaneously remediate the tailings (removing manganese, reducing contamination risk from the impoundment) and produce HPMSM for European EV battery supply chains — converting a Communist-era industrial waste legacy into a material for 21st-century electromobility. This framing makes Chvaletice the "environmental dividend" version of critical mineral extraction: no new mining, just processing a cleanup obligation into strategic supply.
