Evonik Industries was formed in 2007 as a spinoff from RAG AG (formerly Ruhrkohle AG), the German coal mining company that had dominated Ruhr Valley coal extraction for decades. As Germany's coal industry declined through the late 20th century, RAG had diversified its asset base through acquisitions — including Degussa AG, one of Germany's major specialty chemicals companies (founded in 1843 in Frankfurt as Deutsche Gold und Silber Scheideanstalt, a gold and silver refining company). Degussa became the core of what is now Evonik. The Degussa acquisition gave Evonik its specialty chemicals portfolio including animal nutrition amino acids: Degussa had pioneered industrial DL-methionine synthesis for poultry feed in the 1950s, recognizing that supplementing amino acids in poultry feed dramatically improved feed conversion efficiency. Evonik's animal nutrition division built on this heritage, adding lysine (fermentation-derived via Biolys brand) alongside methionine. The Volgodonsk, Russia lysine plant — built before Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine — became a significant liability: Evonik faced a choice between continuing operations that indirectly benefit Russia's food security and exiting an asset at financial loss. Ruhr coal mining → specialty chemicals → poultry amino acids that determine the price of chicken worldwide — a 180-year industrial lineage from Ruhrkohle AG to the poultry feed supply chain.
