Farmson produces both acetaminophen (APAP) — the pain-relieving active ingredient in Tylenol — AND caffeine API for combination analgesic products (e.g., Excedrin combines aspirin, APAP, and caffeine). The same Gujarat manufacturing campus produces: (1) APAP for pain relief — the API in the world's most widely used OTC analgesic/antipyretic; (2) Caffeine for pharmaceutical stimulant applications — used in combination headache products and to extend the duration of APAP's analgesic effect. Caffeine also serves: food/beverage manufacturers (energy drinks, cola), cosmetic topical formulations (anti-cellulite creams, eye creams), and is a controlled substance in some sports supplement contexts. The same Farmson-produced caffeine that amplifies the headache-relieving effect of an Excedrin tablet is also in energy drinks and performance supplements. An Indian API manufacturer is embedded simultaneously in household medicine cabinets (Tylenol, Excedrin) and in consumer energy product supply chains from the same chemistry base.

Farmson Pharmaceutical's rise as a global APAP supplier was enabled by India's foundational pharmaceutical policy decision: the Indian Patents Act of 1970 (enacted under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi) eliminated product patents for pharmaceutical compounds in India, allowing Indian manufacturers to produce generic versions of patented drugs without license fees. This policy — sharply criticized by Western pharmaceutical companies and the US Trade Representative — allowed India's pharmaceutical industry to develop manufacturing scale for APIs like APAP, ibuprofen, and antibiotics without patent constraints. India became the world's pharmacy for generic drugs in part because of this deliberate 1970 policy choice. Farmson, founded in Ahmedabad, Gujarat in 1994 (three years after India's 1991 economic liberalization), benefited from both the patent-free manufacturing environment and post-liberalization export opportunities. Today Farmson is positioned as the primary non-Chinese APAP API source for Western pharmaceutical companies pursuing 'China +1' supply diversification — a commercial position that exists because of both India's 1970 patent policy and the post-COVID supply chain de-risking movement.
