Fishman dominates a different kind of pickup — the piezoelectric transducer that amplifies acoustic guitars by sensing the strings' vibration through the saddle, rather than a magnet sensing steel strings. Piezo pickups use piezoelectric ceramics, the same family of materials (typically lead zirconate titanate, PZT) that powers medical-ultrasound transducers, sonar, industrial sensors and actuators, inkjet printheads and the MLCC capacitors in every phone. So an acoustic-guitar amplification company sits on the piezoelectric-materials base shared with medicine, defense and electronics. The quiet strum of an amplified acoustic guitar uses the same physical effect, and similar ceramics, as a submarine's sonar and a hospital's ultrasound — one of the radar's neater material convergences, where a sound-sensing crystal links a coffeehouse guitar to a warship and an operating room. The magnetic-pickup makers depend on cobalt; the piezo maker depends on a different but equally strategic ceramic.
