Foxconn's Zhengzhou "iPhone City" employs 200,000 workers on a 5.4 sq km campus and produces ~70% of all iPhones — the world's most valuable product concentrated in one Chinese city Foxconn's Zhengzhou facility, a 5.4 square kilometer campus in Henan Province, employs up to 200,000 workers and at peak produces approximately 500,000 iPhones per day — roughly 70% of global iPhone output. The facility operates with significant government support from Zhengzhou municipal and Henan provincial authorities. In November 2022, COVID lockdown policies at the facility triggered a worker exodus and labor protests, causing Apple to miss holiday quarter iPhone 14 Pro shipments and issue a rare public warning about supply disruption. The concentration of iPhone production in a single Chinese campus represents perhaps the largest single-facility supply chain concentration in consumer goods.

Foxconn was founded in 1974 by Terry Gou in a rented apartment in Tucheng, Taiwan with $7,500 and 10 employees making plastic components for televisions. The company spent its early decades as an unremarkable Taiwanese connector and cable manufacturer. The transformative moment came in 1988 when Gou opened the first Foxconn factory in Shenzhen, China -- one of the first major Taiwanese investments in the mainland after Deng Xiaoping opened Special Economic Zones. By co-locating in China ahead of competitors and building vertically integrated manufacturing campuses (housing, cafeterias, security, tooling, assembly all on-site), Foxconn gave Apple and other Western brands the ability to scale manufacturing at a speed and cost impossible in any other geography. When Apple chose Foxconn as its primary iPhone assembler in 2001, both companies grew together in a co-dependent relationship that has now persisted for 25 years.
