Irvine Scientific was founded in 1970 in Santa Ana, California as a specialty biological media developer focused on cell biology and reproductive technology. The company became the leading supplier of IVF embryo culture media to fertility clinics — media that allows human embryos to develop in vitro during assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures. FUJIFILM Corporation, which had seen its core photographic film business collapse with the transition to digital photography, acquired Irvine Scientific in 2017 as part of its "Value from Innovation" healthcare transformation strategy. The same FUJIFILM that was making Kodak's photographic film competitor is now making the media in which IVF embryos develop.
