Fuyao Glass (China) entered the US OEM auto glass market in 2014 by converting a former GM plant in Moraine, Ohio; by 2023 it controlled ~25% of North American OEM windshield supply with a 10% cost advantage over domestic competitors; legacy US supplier Vitro lost approximately 50% of its output share since Fuyao's entry — making Chinese-owned production the dominant source for Ford, GM, Stellantis, Honda, and Mercedes-Benz windshields

Fuyao Glass was founded in 1987 by Cao Dewang in Fuqing, Fujian Province. Cao had been selling glass from a small state enterprise before starting his own company with minimal capital. He recognized that China's auto industry expansion would require domestic windshield manufacturing — at the time, Chinese automakers imported glass from Saint-Gobain (France), AGC (Japan), and Pilkington (UK). Cao focused entirely on automotive glass quality standards and drove Fuyao to OEM qualification with Chinese automakers in the 1990s, then global OEMs as they entered China in the 2000s. In 2014, Fuyao acquired the former General Motors plant in Moraine, Ohio — a factory that had closed in 2008 during the auto industry crisis — for $1 to open a US production facility. The story of Chinese management and American labor at the Moraine plant was documented in "American Factory" (2019), directed by Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar and produced by Barack and Michelle Obama's Higher Ground Productions. The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The world's dominant automotive glass company, built by one Chinese entrepreneur from 1987, became the subject of an Oscar-winning film about the future of American manufacturing.
