  • Did you know2021

According to a 2016 study by China Swine Industry Science, Genesus supplied 42% of all registered breeding swine imported into China in that year — a documented dominant position that no other Western genetics company has matched for the Chinese market. Genesus built this position over 15+ years through a distribution partnership with Tianzow (a 2008 Hylife/Manitoba joint venture), multiple nucleus farms on Chinese soil, and regular Chinese-language market intelligence reports. In 2021, Zhengbang Group (then one of China's largest pork producers) imported 2,400 GGP breeding pigs from Genesus's US nucleus in what Zhengbang described as the largest single order shipment of breeding pigs ever imported from the United States by a Chinese enterprise — three planeloads. The family company that built this position has now passed to an opaque investment vehicle (Canada ZF Investments) led by a CEO whose primary business is China import-export trade, at a moment when scrutiny of Chinese access to Western agricultural genetics is intensifying.

  • Origin2024

Genesus was built over 30+ years by Jim Long and his family in rural Manitoba as a privately held pig genetics exporter. In June 2024, Bank of Montreal triggered receivership proceedings after Genesus breached loan repayment obligations; BDO Canada was appointed receiver over Genesus Inc., Genesus Genetics, and Can-Am Genetics Inc. In July 2024, Canada ZF Investments — an investment vehicle whose ownership is not publicly disclosed — acquired the company out of receivership. The new CEO installed was Glen Behl, whose background includes building a $35M/year meat distribution business, a 325,000 sq ft Asian food service company (Fluey Trading), and trade operations exporting canola oil and wine to China while importing shrimp, tires, rebar, and air conditioners. The company was rebranded True North Genetics as a parent entity. Jim Long, whose China market expertise built Genesus's dominant position in Chinese breeding imports, nominally retained a role. The strategic direction of the company under its new China-trade-oriented ownership is not yet clear.

  • Incident2024

Genesus Inc., Canada's largest independent swine genetics company, entered receivership on June 12, 2024, after Bank of Montreal enforced on repayment obligations breached since mid-2023. BDO Canada appointed receiver. The company — which claims >80% of Canadian registered purebred breeding stock — was restructured under new majority owner Canada ZF Investments and rebranded Genesus Genetic Technologies. The episode eliminated Canada's only independent major swine genetics company, introducing ownership with no prior genetics industry track record.

  • Capacity2024

Genesus has spent 25+ years selecting its Jersey Red Duroc line explicitly against the prevailing industry trend: while the entire commercial swine genetics industry optimized for leanness and feed conversion from the 1980s through the 2010s, Genesus selected hard for intramuscular fat (marbling), meat pH, color, tenderness, and eating experience. CEO Jim Long documented this contrarian position extensively in weekly industry commentaries, arguing that 40 years of leanness breeding drove consumers away from pork toward beef and chicken. Genesus's genomic selection tracks backfat, loin depth, pH, color, tenderness, intramuscular fat, and primal weights via weekly carcass testing — an unusually extensive eating-quality selection program for a commodity genetics company. This positions them uniquely for premium Asian pork markets (where Chinese consumers pay triple for premium 'black pig' pork) if those markets continue expanding.
