Global Bio-Chem Technology Group is headquartered in Changchun, Jilin Province — the capital of one of China's most agriculturally significant provinces. Jilin Province is part of the "Black Soil" (Heizhitu) belt of northeastern China — volcanic-derived chernozem soils of extraordinary fertility that run through Jilin, Heilongjiang, and parts of Inner Mongolia. These black soils, among the richest agricultural land in the world (comparable to Iowa's corn belt soils), make Jilin the largest corn-producing province in China per unit area. Global Bio-Chem was founded to capitalize on this geographic advantage: by locating its corn fermentation operations in the province where the corn is grown, it eliminates long-distance corn transport costs. The company processes approximately 3 million tonnes of corn annually — a significant fraction of Jilin's corn output — fermenting it with bacteria to produce lysine, the amino acid essential for poultry and swine nutrition. The proximity advantage means Global Bio-Chem's lysine production costs are linked to Jilin corn harvest conditions: a drought year in Jilin (the Black Soil drought risk is increasing with climate change) simultaneously affects the corn input cost and the corn supply availability for the world's largest Asia-based lysine producer.
