Concentration2024
GoerTek is a Chinese acoustics-and-assembly giant that, behind the scenes, builds a huge share of the world's premium wireless earbuds and VR headsets. It is a major contract assembler of Apple AirPods and Meta's Quest VR headsets, and a leading maker of MEMS microphones used across phones, earbuds and smart devices. So like Pou Chen for sneakers, GoerTek is the contract manufacturer behind products consumers think of purely as Apple or Meta — the AirPods in your ears and the Quest on your face may well have been assembled by GoerTek in China. Premium audio and VR hardware, marketed as Western-brand innovation, depends heavily on a single Chinese assembler and its acoustic components, concentrating both the components and the assembly of next-generation wearables in one company.

GoerTek's dual role — making the microphones and speakers and assembling the headsets — puts it at the heart of the "spatial computing" and hearables transition. As AR/VR and AI-earbuds scale, the manufacturing concentrates further on GoerTek and a few peers. And MEMS microphones, GoerTek's component specialty, are a near-ubiquitous, voice-interface-enabling chip — in every smart speaker, phone and earbud listening for a wake word. So a microphone-and-assembly company sits under the always-listening, voice-and-spatial-computing layer of consumer tech, both as a component maker and as the factory. It's another case of a critical next-generation-hardware capability — the ears of every device and the assembly of the wearables that will carry AR and ambient AI — concentrated in China, where the same company supplies the sensing component and physically builds the product around it.
