Cybex — marketed as a sleek German design house — and Evenflo, one of the most recognizable American car-seat names, are both owned by Goodbaby International, headquartered in Kunshan, Jiangsu. Goodbaby is also the world's largest stroller manufacturer and the unnamed original-design manufacturer (ODM) behind a long list of other Western baby brands. Goodbaby was founded in 1989 by Song Zhenghuan, a former middle-school teacher, in Kunshan near Shanghai, beginning as a domestic Chinese stroller maker. Rather than stay an anonymous contract manufacturer, it executed a deliberate move up the value chain by acquiring established Western brands — buying premium German label Cybex and American mainstay Evenflo in 2014 — to capture brand margin and Western distribution while keeping low-cost manufacturing at home. The result is a Hong Kong-listed (1086.HK) roll-up that is simultaneously the world's largest stroller factory and the owner of brands shoppers think of as European or American.
