Granules India Limited (Hyderabad, Telangana) is the rare pharmaceutical company that manufactures both the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) AND the finished oral tablet for three of the most widely prescribed/consumed medications globally: (1) Acetaminophen/APAP (Tylenol equivalent): OTC analgesic/antipyretic; (2) Ibuprofen (Advil equivalent): OTC NSAID pain and anti-inflammatory; (3) Metformin: first-line oral treatment for Type 2 diabetes. The vertical integration from API to finished tablet is unusual: most API manufacturers sell bulk API to formulation companies; Granules compresses its own APAP and ibuprofen into tablets and supplies them as finished dosage forms to US and European private-label OTC brands. This means the Walmart store-brand 'equate' acetaminophen tablet may contain Granules-manufactured API and be produced in a Granules facility in Hyderabad — from an Indian company invisible to the consumer behind the store brand packaging.
