H.C. Starck Ceramics GmbH in Selb, Bavaria is the direct descendant of Hutschenreuther AG's technical ceramics division — and Hutschenreuther is one of Germany's most famous fine china and porcelain manufacturers, founded in 1814 in Selb. The Selb region of northern Bavaria became the center of the German porcelain industry in the 19th century because of local kaolin deposits (the white clay used in porcelain) and coal for kiln firing. For 170 years, Hutschenreuther made fine china dinnerware before diversifying into technical ceramics in 1985 under the name Hutschenreuther Technische Keramik. H.C. Starck acquired the operation in 2001 and renamed it H.C. Starck Ceramics GmbH. The same Selb factory that made the bone china tea sets on German dining room shelves for over a century now makes the yttria-stabilized zirconia components used in jet turbine thermal barrier coatings, dental crowns, and solid oxide fuel cells — fine porcelain manufacturing expertise converted into precision industrial ceramics through a single site's continuous evolution.
