Hormel's SPAM brand underwent one of the most unusual brand transformations in food history. Invented in 1937 as a shelf-stable luncheon meat, SPAM became associated with US military supply during WWII (12 million cans distributed to military and Allied nations per week) and with low-income convenience food in post-war America. In South Korea, the introduction of SPAM via US military bases during the Korean War (1950-1953) created a premium perception: SPAM was a luxury product unavailable under post-war scarcity. Today, South Korea has the second-highest SPAM consumption rate per capita globally and SPAM gift sets (beautiful boxes of multiple SPAM cans) are a standard holiday gift for Chuseok and Lunar New Year — the Korean equivalent of giving someone fine wine or a premium food hamper. The same product that Americans associate with cheap convenience food is a luxury gift item in Seoul. Hormel sells $250M+ in SPAM to South Korea annually at premium prices in gift packaging. A US wartime canned meat ration became a luxury gift through cultural distance and scarcity memory.
