Huhtamäki was founded in 1920 in Turku, Finland by Heikki Huhtamäki as a confectionery and candy company — not a packaging company. For its first five decades, Huhtamäki made chocolates, candy, and packaged foods. The company pivoted to packaging in the 1960s-70s as it recognized that the packaging for its own products was as valuable as the products themselves. Huhtamäki eventually sold its food businesses and refocused entirely on packaging.
