Hyosung's Creora spandex is publicly known for making yoga pants and athletic wear, but the same polyurethane elastane fiber also forms the structural compression element of medical-grade graduated compression stockings — Class I-II medical devices that prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in post-surgical and long-distance travel patients, treat lymphedema, and manage chronic venous insufficiency. Medical compression garments require highly precise elastane tension curves: too little compression fails the therapeutic goal; too much can impair circulation. The precise elastic modulus of Creora or competitor spandex fibers determines both the feel of a pair of Nike leggings AND the therapeutic efficacy of post-surgical DVT prevention stockings. Hyosung TNC (Korean spandex producer) and The Lycra Company (Shandong Ruyi, Chinese-acquired DuPont/Invista brand) together supply the polyurethane elastane for both the activewear revolution and the medical compression therapy market from essentially the same fiber chemistry.
