IDEAL Fastener explicitly produces both commercial garment zippers (fashion/retail supply chain) and MIL-SPEC military zippers approved by the Defense Logistics Agency. The MIL-SPEC zipper on a US Army tactical vest and the zipper on a commercial winter jacket may both be IDEAL products, made to entirely different specifications but in the same factories. Because DoD procurement rules have sometimes required Berry Amendment compliance (US-sourced materials and manufacturing) for military textiles, IDEAL's maintained US manufacturing is strategically significant — the same company serving Walmart's private label apparel is also a critical supplier in the military equipment procurement system, two supply chains that operate under entirely different regulatory frameworks but converge at IDEAL's manufacturing network.
IDEAL Fastener Corporation ↗Origin2023
IDEAL Fastener Corporation was founded in 1936 in the United States as the zipper industry was undergoing rapid expansion. IDEAL retained US manufacturing presence through the 20th century even as competitors offshore production by serving military and government markets that preferred or required domestic sourcing — becoming a Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) approved supplier of MIL-SPEC zippers. This government defense contract base gave IDEAL revenue stability while mass-market fashion zipper production migrated to Asia, and funded expansion into Bangladesh, India, and Mexico to serve both military and commercial markets globally.
