Innospec is the world's sole remaining legal manufacturer of tetraethyl lead (TEL) — the antiknock additive that defined the leaded gasoline era. Automotive leaded fuel has been banned globally as of ~2021. However, TEL remains the only additive that allows 100LL aviation gasoline (avgas) to meet the minimum 100-octane requirement for high-compression piston aircraft engines. All ~167,000 general aviation piston aircraft in the U.S. depend on 100LL avgas. Innospec has committed to producing TEL through 2030 (when EPA mandates the transition to unleaded avgas), but explicitly warns this is likely irreversible — the corrosive nature of TEL production destroys manufacturing equipment, and no company would invest to rebuild capacity. After 2030, 100LL avgas ceases to exist and Innospec's TEL business ends permanently.

STADIS 450, manufactured by Innospec Inc., is the sole worldwide-approved Static Dissipator Additive for aviation turbine jet fuel under ASTM D1655, DEF STAN 91-091, and military specifications. Its use is mandatory in most aviation turbine fuels to prevent static charge buildup during high-velocity fuel transfer. There is no approved alternative. Innospec's primary manufacturing site for STADIS 450 is Ellesmere Port, UK. Recent industry reports document "longer than usual lead times with several vendors due to global shortage of raw materials" — a single-source additive with supply fragility.

Innospec's origin is Imperial Chemical Industries' tetraethyl lead (TEL) plant, built in 1938 at Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. ICI sold it in 1948 to a consortium of oil majors — Shell, BP, Texaco, Mobil, Chevron — who formed Associated Octel to control their own supply of the dominant antiknock additive. As leaded automotive fuel was banned globally through the 1970s–2000s, Octel executed a 40-year pivot into non-lead fuel additives, then personal care, oilfield, and construction chemicals. Renamed Innospec in 2006 to sever the brand from its leaded past — after a DOJ conviction in 2010 for paying $9.2M in bribes to Iraq and Indonesia officials to maintain TEL sales contracts worth $176M.
