Insulet reinvented the insulin pump as a disposable wearable — and then as a piece of an artificial pancreas. Diabetes technology is a concentrated, fast-consolidating field, and Insulet's position in it shows how a few firms now mediate a chronic disease for millions. Insulin pumps are dominated by just a handful of makers — Insulet (Omnipod), Medtronic and Tandem — and the broader automated-insulin-delivery ecosystem depends on tight integration between those pumps and an equally concentrated set of continuous-glucose-monitor makers (Dexcom and Abbott).
