IOL Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals
World's largest single ibuprofen API manufacturer; claims 35% global market share; 12,000 tonnes/year capacity; the only company globally backward-integrated into isobutylbenzene (IBB), the key ibuprofen precursor. Received China NMPA approval April 2025 to export to China.

IOL Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals (Fatehabad, Haryana, India; BSE: 524164) was founded in 1986 in Fatehabad — a small city in Haryana state — as an acetic acid producer. Through vertical integration and technology licensing, IOL developed one of the world's most efficient ibuprofen synthesis operations, using the 'Green Ibuprofen' process licensed from BHC Company (BASF/Boots joint venture) that reduces synthesis from 6 steps to 4 steps with dramatically lower waste. IOL's Fatehabad plant now claims 35% of global ibuprofen API production. IOL's CEO Rajesh Sahni has noted that IOL's ibuprofen is present in 'practically every ibuprofen product in the world.' When SI Group exited the ibuprofen market in September 2024, IOL became the effective global backstop for non-Chinese ibuprofen supply. If IOL's Fatehabad plant were disrupted — by fire, flooding (Haryana's Ghaggar river floods periodically), regulatory action, or power outage — the non-Chinese portion of global ibuprofen supply would be severely compromised within weeks.
IOL Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals ↗Origin2023
IOL Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals holds a structural competitive advantage that no other ibuprofen manufacturer has replicated: backward integration into isobutylbenzene (IBB), the immediate chemical precursor to ibuprofen in the standard Boots synthesis pathway. When the Boots Company (UK) invented ibuprofen in the 1960s (discovered by chemist Stewart Adams; patented 1961), the synthesis required IBB as a feedstock. Most ibuprofen manufacturers buy IBB from specialty chemical producers. IOL built its own IBB production from propylene and benzene — a capital-intensive investment that insulates IOL from IBB supply disruptions and gives cost advantages when IBB markets are tight. This vertical integration from commodity petrochemicals (propylene, benzene) through IBB to pharmaceutical-grade ibuprofen API is unique globally. A Punjab, India manufacturer achieved 35% global ibuprofen API market share by controlling its own upstream chemistry chain — a pharmaceutical supply chain strategy more common in integrated oil/chemical companies than in API manufacturers.

IOL Chemicals' production at Barnala, Punjab spans two completely separate market categories from the same industrial complex: (1) Pharmaceutical APIs — ibuprofen API (35% global share) for OTC and prescription pain/anti-inflammatory medications globally; (2) Industrial chemicals — acetic acid and ethyl acetate for coatings, solvents, food applications, and industrial chemical synthesis. Ibuprofen (OTC analgesic, anti-inflammatory) and ethyl acetate (nail polish remover solvent, paint solvent) emerge from different chemistry pathways but share the same Punjab manufacturing infrastructure. The acetic acid IOL produces is used in: food-grade acidity (vinegar component), pharmaceutical synthesis (acyl chloride reactions), and PET polyester (with ethylene glycol for plastic bottle feedstock). Same company: the API in every Advil tablet AND an ingredient in paint remover and food preservation. The April 2025 China NMPA approval — allowing IOL to export ibuprofen to China, historically the world's pharmaceutical API manufacturer — reversed a conventional trade flow and demonstrated that Indian pharmaceutical quality and cost-competitiveness has reached parity for select APIs.
