  • Origin2023

Douwe Egberts, the company's oldest brand, was founded in 1753 in Joure, Netherlands as a tea and tobacco shop — becoming one of the oldest continuously operating food brands in the world. The company entered coffee in the 19th century as coffee replaced tea as the dominant hot beverage in continental Europe. Douwe Egberts remained a Dutch family business until 1978 when it was acquired by Sara Lee Corporation (American food company). Sara Lee later spun off JDE as a separate company. JAB Holding (the Reimann family, German industrial family whose company used forced labor during Nazi Germany, formally acknowledged and apologized in 2018) acquired JDE, then Peet's Coffee (US, founded 1966 in Berkeley by Alfred Peet — who also trained Starbucks founders), forming JDE Peet's. A 270-year-old Dutch tea shop, a Nazi-era family holding company, and the mentor company of Starbucks's founders ended up as the same corporate entity and second-largest coffee company in the world.
