Kenda Rubber is the lawn-mower-tire supplier that this radar surfaced it as — but that's a footnote to its real scale: Kenda is one of the largest bicycle-tire makers on Earth, fitted as original equipment on an enormous number of bikes regardless of the brand on the frame. Like Giant in frames and DT Swiss and Sapim in spokes, Kenda is another node of the Taiwanese cycling-supply cluster that quietly equips much of the world's bicycles. And the same rubber-and-tread competency spans powersports (motorcycle, ATV, golf-cart), turf and trailer tires, and increasingly passenger-car tires. So a single Taiwanese company makes the tire under your bike, the ATV, the riding mower, the trailer and, more and more, the car — a breadth across "wheeled things" that the consumer, seeing many different brands, would never connect to one maker.

Kenda was founded in 1962 in Yuanlin, Taiwan, and like Giant it grew up on the back of Taiwan's bicycle-export boom — starting in bicycle tires and steadily climbing the value chain into motorcycle, ATV, trailer and finally passenger-car tires, while building its own brand rather than staying an anonymous contract manufacturer. The family-controlled company is a textbook example of the Taiwanese OEM-to-brand trajectory: master a humble, high-volume component (here, bike tires), accumulate manufacturing scale and quality, then expand into adjacent and higher-value tire categories under your own name. That arc — repeated across Giant (frames), Kenda and Maxxis/CST (tires), and Shimano's neighbors — is why the unassuming island of Taiwan sits behind such a large share of the world's bicycles and, increasingly, its specialty and replacement tires.

The bicycle-tire market most riders imagine as a contest of European names (Continental, Schwalbe, Pirelli) is, at the manufacturing base, heavily Taiwanese: Kenda and the Cheng Shin group (maker of the CST and Maxxis brands) together supply an outsized share of the world's bicycle and powersports tires, both under their own labels and as OEM for others. As with frames and spokes, this concentrates a core bicycle component into a few Taiwanese producers, making the island a chokepoint for cycling supply that became visible during pandemic bike shortages. Kenda's push into automotive tires extends that Taiwanese tire footprint further up-market — another instance of an Asian specialty-component maker leveraging volume dominance in a humble category to contest a much larger one.
