Kyowa Kirin was created by the 2008 merger of Kyowa Hakko Kogyo (a Tokyo fermentation biochemicals company founded in 1949) and Kirin Pharma (the pharmaceutical arm of Kirin Holdings, Japan's second-largest brewer). The Kirin brewery-to-pharma genealogy is direct: Kirin Brewery (founded 1888 as the Japan Brewery Company, initially with British and American shareholders after the Meiji era opening of Japan) applied its industrial fermentation expertise for brewing to pharmaceutical and biochemical applications in the 20th century, eventually spinning off Kirin Pharma as the pharmaceutical arm. Kyowa Hakko, the 1949 fermentation biotechnology company, had spent the postwar era applying microbial fermentation to produce amino acids (lysine, glutamine) and nucleotides using the same batch fermentation technology used to brew beer. The merged Kyowa Kirin combines 150+ years of Japanese brewing fermentation tradition with postwar biopharmaceutical development. The company's amino acid production — including pharmaceutical-grade taurine for regulated pet food and infant formula applications — traces to the 1888 Yokohama brewery that started the Kirin lineage.
