Did you know2024
Land O'Lakes is the only major US agricultural cooperative that simultaneously: (1) sells crop protection chemicals and seed to dairy and beef farmers (Winfield United); (2) sells those same farmers the feed for their cattle (Purina Animal Nutrition); and (3) buys the milk from those farmers' cows (dairy cooperative). A Minnesota dairy farmer can be a Land O'Lakes member who buys herbicide from Winfield, feeds their dairy herd Purina Gold 24 ration, and ships their milk to Land O'Lakes for processing into butter sold at Walmart — all within one cooperative ecosystem. No other US cooperative operates across farm inputs, animal nutrition, and farm output in the same integrated structure. This creates an unusual competitive position: Land O'Lakes customer relationships extend from planting through feeding through milk check, giving it data and supply chain influence across the entire dairy farm operation that no competitor can match.
Land O'Lakes, Inc. ↗Origin2023
Land O'Lakes was founded in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1921 as the Minnesota Cooperative Creameries Association — a collective marketing cooperative formed by Minnesota dairy farmers who were receiving below-cost prices for their butter and cream from independent buyers. The cooperative's butter brand (Land O'Lakes, named for Minnesota's lakes) became one of the US's most recognized consumer brands. Land O'Lakes expanded from butter into cheese, fluid milk, and organic dairy over the 20th century. The strategic pivot into crop inputs (Winfield United, 2015 merger with United Suppliers) and animal nutrition (Purina Animal Nutrition acquisition from JM Smucker in 2001) transformed Land O'Lakes from a dairy marketing cooperative into a full-service agricultural enterprise serving farmers at every stage of their operations — from planting through feeding through processing their output.
