The camera lenses in most of the world's premium smartphones are made by one Taiwanese company: Largan Precision. It is the dominant maker of the tiny stacks of injection-molded plastic aspherical lenses inside phone cameras, and a key Apple supplier. As phones added multiple cameras — wide, ultrawide, telephoto and periscope — the lens content per phone multiplied, and Largan's position with it. So the photographic capability that has become a primary selling point of smartphones depends heavily on one specialist Taiwanese lens maker. The phone brands market camera quality as their own innovation, but the precision plastic optics that actually form the image come, in many flagships, from Largan. It's another premium-phone-feature chokepoint stacked on top of the chip and component concentrations the radar already maps — and another reason "Taiwan risk" reaches well beyond semiconductors.

Largan's precision lens-molding capability is expanding beyond phones into automotive cameras (ADAS and autonomy need many cameras), AR/VR optics and other imaging — so the same company that makes phone-camera lenses is positioned to supply the eyes of cars and headsets too. As cameras proliferate (a modern car may carry a dozen), the lens supply concentrates on the few precision-optics makers able to mold aspherical elements to spec at volume, with Largan a leader. So a smartphone-lens maker becomes a node in automotive perception and spatial computing — the same phone-to-car-to-headset convergence seen with LiDAR (Hesai/RoboSense) and acoustics (GoerTek), now playing out in optics. The lens, like the microphone and the LiDAR, is a horizontal chokepoint across every camera-bearing device, and it concentrates in a handful of Asian precision-manufacturers.
