Incident2023
In July 2023, Borealis sold its entire nitrogen and melamine business -- including the Linz, Austria plant with 70+ years of history -- to Agrofert, the largest Czech private company. Agrofert is controlled by Andrej Babis, former Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, who faced EU conflict-of-interest investigations because Agrofert received EU agricultural subsidies while he held public office. The ownership transfer added a political risk dimension to Europe's third-largest melamine plant.
